Dutch Filmmaker

After a study at the Academy of Arts in Tilburg, Rob Brouwer was lecturing Arts and Crafts and photography between 1972 and 1979 in education centers in Breda and Amsterdam Netherlands.

After his studies at the Academy of Art Faculty Audiovisual Communication in Amsterdam, he was lecturing Audiovisual Communication in Amsterdam, between 1981 and 1985 for specific professions at bachelors level . Analyzing film, audiovisuals and focusing on AV communication through practical workshops in photography and video production.

During the period of the undercover war against the Sandinista Government by the United States Rob Brouwer was based in Managua Nicaragua as a free-lance cameraman and filmmaker for European Broadcasters. Covering news-events, and produced features in Latin America and the Caribbean. Was during a year lecturing at the UCA University in Managua- faculty of journalists.

Worked as a photographer- stringer for Reuters and between 1987 and 1988 as staff-member for Agence France Press as a news photographer, responsible for image feed for Washington HQ

Worked from his home base in Managua from 1985 until 1997 as an independent filmmaker producing documentaries focusing on Human Rights issues in Latin America. Produced documentaries and features between 1988 - 1997in a collective TV cooperation with Leo Gabriel ( TV Austria) Dirk Vander Sypen en Jan Van Bilsen ( VRT Belgium ) Cornel Lagrouw ( Dutch TV en Jan Kees de Rooy Vara TV)

Is since 1997 head of the audiovisual Department of Amnesty International Netherlands and made features and documentaries about human right issues in Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America.

Programs have been distributed in co-production with broadcasters and through the world wide network of Amnesty International and Documentary Festivals.

Works also as an independent cameraman for longer documentaries broadcasted by Human a Dutch broadcast company like the 60 minutes programs “Against my Will”

( about Honor killings in Pakistan ) and “An ox for a Baby” about healthcare for women in Ethiopia. ( Directed by Ayfer Ergün )

Made series of filmed portraits of Human Right Defenders for the Martin Ennals Foundation

In Colombia, Pakistan, Mexico, Nigeria, Guatemala, Kosovo, Chad, Gaza and Russia and broadcasted by Televison Suisse Romande in Geneva and TV5

Worked for IKON Televison in Kosovo and Albania, Colombia, Afghanistan, Chili, El Salvador and Nicaragua realizing mostly 30 minutes short documentaries.

As a staff member of Amnesty International he recently worked on issues “focusing on the so-called rendition flights related to the “War on Terror” Different stories about victims with no legal rights were filmed in Yemen in 2006.
